Outside New York

Not in New York yet? Tell me where you are.

Physical therapy is licensed state by state, and I am currently licensed to treat patients who are physically in New York State at the time of the visit. That is a legal line, not a preference, and I will not cross it.

What I can do is this: send you the same three free videos New Yorkers get, point you to a clinician certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy near you if I know of one, and put your state on the list that decides where VMPT gets licensed next.

The three free videos, now

They show how to find the movements and postures that relieve your own pain, using the same principles as a VMPT assessment. Plenty of people sort out a flare-up with these alone.

A referral, if I know a good one

MDT is practiced by certified clinicians across the country. Tick the box on the form and I will tell you if I know of one near you. The McKenzie Institute USA also keeps a directory of certified clinicians, and it is worth asking any physical therapist directly whether they hold the Cert. MDT credential.

First word when your state opens

Every state on this list is a vote. When enough people in one state ask, that is the state I pursue licensure in next, and you get one email the day it happens.

Questions

Why can a video visit not cross a state line?

You are on video. Why does my location matter?

Because the rule follows the patient, not the screen. A physical therapist has to be licensed in the state where the patient is located at the time of care. New York is where I am licensed, so New York is where you need to be during the visit.

I live elsewhere but I am visiting New York. Can we do a visit then?

Yes. What matters is where you physically are during the visit. If you are in New York for a week and can do a visit or two from there, book as usual and mention it on the call.

Which states are you looking at next?

The ones this list tells me to. Licensure takes time and money per state, so I go where the demand is. Adding your state to the list is the most useful thing you can do to move it up.

In New York after all?
